Do It Yourself Drywall Repair Tips

* Clean the area, scrape all loose drywall from the area and then assess how you will secure a drywall patch.

For Small holes, like the one below,  a patch kit from a home improvement store can be used, or you can create your own patch!

To make your own patch

A hole in drywall marked with wet paint.

1 - Mark the outside of the hole with paint, or drywall mud.

2 - Press a small piece of drywall against the hole to mark it on the backside of the drywall.

3 - Using a utility knife, score the hole where the mark was made. Then remove the drywall around the hole, leaving the paper on the front.

4 - You now have a patch that fits perfectly in the hole. Now take your wet drywall mud (Not shown) and put some around the hole and on the inside edges of the hole. Then press the patch in place and apply more drywall mud over the patch, using a drywall knife to smooth the area. Once this is dry, you may need one more coat of drywall mud and then when dry a light sanding to create a smooth finish. Now it is ready for paint!

For large holes, like the one pictured on the top of the page, braces need to be made and placed into the house framing, to provide a place for the drywall to be secured. Make sure you use the same drywall thickness for a patch as the current drywall. Even then, you may need to shim the patch to meet the existing drywall. Once the patch is in place, the same process as above with drywall mud and tape is used until the space has a clean, smooth finish and is ready for paint.
